Lifelong Learning as Critical Action wins the Cyril O. Houle Award for Outstanding Literature in Adult Education
André P. Grace’s Lifelong Learning as Critical Action has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Cyril O. Houle Award for Outstanding Literature in Adult Education, an award given annually by the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education.
Founded in 1981, the award was established to honour the scholarship and memory of Cyril O. Houle, Professor of Adult Education at the University of Chicago. It recognizes a book published in English in the previous year that reflects universal concerns of adult educators.
In Lifelong Learning as Critical Action, André P. Grace examines the quality of lifelong learning in historical and contemporary contexts, with an emphasis on multivariate learner populations and education as a platform for social engagement, ethics, and justice. Award committee members noted that the book takes a critical and sociological perspective to issues such as economic forces for change, diversity, movement of people, policy, and adult education practice and is critically needed to address lifelong education in the current uncertain times.
The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) was founded in 1982 and is dedicated to providing leadership for the field of adult and continuing education by expanding opportunities for adult growth and development.
The award was presented on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the AAACE Awards Luncheon during the AAACE Conference in North Charleston, South Carolina.
